Chapter 12
Darria set Omar down on the desk in her attic. Mercury had brought them home. He was in the backyard talking to Lina, Marie, and Rory. She was exhausted and wanted to be left alone. Her heart was sick from the loss of her familiar. The hand was charred. His fingers were shriveled. His skin was cracked and brittle. She looked at her left hand and saw no damage, but she couldnât feel anything in it. Her heart felt broken as though something had been pulled out of her that she couldnât fill.
âMind if I come in?â
Marie stood in the doorway of her office. Darria glanced at the other woman. She had not asked what happened, but Darria figured she knew by now. The warmth in her eyes let her know that Marie cared.
âSure, come on in.â Darria invited her in so she could pass through the enchantment over the office. The other necromancer took her left hand. She could feel the warmth of her energy passing over her.
âIâm sorry about Omar. I sensed his absence and the wound dealt to you. Can you feel my hand?â
âYes.â Everything in her seemed to have died along with Omar.
âGood. It means you havenât lost your familiar.â
âWhat do you mean? His hand is a desiccated, blackened husk that was a result of him buying me some time so that I could break free of the circle. I wounded the one after the undertakers. For retribution, he did this to Omar.â
âOmar didnât die on you. If he did, your hand would also be shriveled.â
A tear slipped down her cheek. âWhere did he go, then?â
Marie ran her fingers over the words tattooed on her left arm. âYou said a spell to free the souls this entity had bound to him?â
âI did. The beings he had were spliced together. The first spell freed the human spirits. The next one came from somewhere. It released the other nonhuman spirits.â
âWhat were the words you spoke exactly?â
Darria threw up her hands. âI donât know. I donât remember. It just rolled off my tongue.â
âIt came from you; itâs still within you. Think, Darria. Youâre a necromancer. You embraced your power. Every spell we do leaves an echo. You can always retrace it, the same way youâre linked to Omar. Follow it. What were the words you said?â
She took a deep breath and assessed what Marie said. She felt the resonance of the enchantment still in the back of her mind. âDeadly threads that bind. Spirits sever ties.â The words came, and something stirred after she had said the words. Whatever was in the room had also been freed. Maybe it was some lingering ghost that had followed her home.
âThe spell released Omar as well. You sent him to his rest. His hand is no longer needed to contain his spirit, but you can summon him back and trap him in the hand.â
âI would never force him to come back.â
âThen call him and ask him. We can reanimate the dead. We can fix dead flesh if need be.
